Today we broke out into learning sessions. I attended the iMovie advanced. I learned how to do split screen shots. This would be so fun to do with students and green screen pictures. It would also be fun for students to do county reports with the split screen function in the iMovie. This however only works on the computer, so if you plan on doing iMovie on the iPad this function will not work.
We worked on our stop motion films, and ours was called Monkey See Monkey Do. We took over 200 frame shots to make a video a little longer than a minute. Stop motion is a lot of fun, but it does take a lot of screen shots. I can see why a story board is very useful in this event.
We viewed the stop motion videos of our class and I saw some really creative ones. The class project was to make a one minute stop motion film. Some peoples were really cute and creative. This just reinforced the idea that this project would be so fun to do at any grade level and it is so easy to use curriculum ties (Reading Street).
THe stop motion apps were fun to get to learn. For our project we used OSnap. I was really excited to use it, but it proved not be as user friendly as I thought it would be. We had to upload it into iTunes, to down load it to YouTube to share. I wish that we could have just shared it form the OSnap app.
Flickr: Great photo storage app. I like how you can friend others and see their photos. I use Flickr mainly as photo storage, and don't really parooze other people's photos. This would be a great place for teachers to store photos that they take of their class, or want to use in their classroom.
Discussion Questions:
1. What are the two specific elements essential for good storytelling that the author focused on in The Art of Digital Storytelling? What is good storytelling?
Two essential elements for good story telling are Living in the story (Sharing personal stories and making connections), and Unfolding lessons learned ( something that has been learned after the digital story has ended).
Good storytelling is a journey that is taken. The journey unfolds as te author digs deep into the story and unveils the meaning of the story from their point of view, while others interpret it for themselves.
2. After reading Digital Storytelling Across the Curriculum, please list and explain three ideas of how you could use digital storytelling in your grade specific curriculum areas with your students.
For the lower elementary grades a teacher could: Use it for handwriting. Teachers could use it for about me presentations. Teachers could use simple stop motion with clay for art. Teachers could use it for patterning.
For the upper elementary grades a teacher could: Have the students explain the steps to a math concept (long division, FOIL, or double digit multiplication) Have them use digital story telling for the Expedition of Lewis and Clark. Have teachers use after students have written a How To.
