Today in class we learned a lot about GPS, GIS, and maps. We all got a GPS device and learned how to use it. These are great. We learned to how to mark an area. We did a "ball challenge." We hid a ball and marked it's location. We then changed GPS units with our partner and found the ball using our partner's GPS unit. This was a fun activity and it made us use our GPS units to complete the task.
In class we also read maps, and did a map bingo. This was also fun. It helped us locate things like waterfalls, streams, and campgrounds on the map. We then put stickies on what we were looking for.
The activities that we did in class were great, and very helpful! I liked looking at all the different types of maps, and all the different sites to see information on maps.
I feel that I learned about GPS devices today. Garmins are easy to use. I plan on uploading all my topo maps to this device. I want to do some geocaching with this device when I go and travel.
I still wonder how easy it will be to change from latitude and longitude to UTMs? Is this possible, I will have to play with it tonight and see.
