We went to the watersheds today. We went to five sites. We started up at Alta Ski Resort and then went to the Red Pine Trail. After this we made out way to a neighborhood and took water samples there. From there we went to Murray Park, and then to the old Fun Dome. At each site we measured the air temp, water temp., turbidity, disolved oxygen, nitrates, and PH. As we moved down the river the temp of the river got warmer. As we moved through the watershed the disolved oxygen increased. The reason for this is because it was laster in the day and there was more time for oxygen to get into the air, photosynthesis. We followed Little Cottonwood creek from the mountains down into the valley. We did not see much change in the nitrates, which is a good thing.
As we moved down the watershed the PH got more basic. We also looked at the insects. As we moved down the stream, we saw less bugs.
This assignment was so fun! It was great to get out and put everything we learned in class into use. This would be fun to do with a class, not all five site though. I really enjoyed this class and everything that I have learned about community mapping and GPS.
