Tonight in class we talked about rubrics, and it made me think about how hard it was at the beginning of the year to teach my students about rubrics. We had to start from the very beginning. We had to learn explicitly how to grade ourselves. My class had a really hard time with reflecting on their learning, because they had never been taught how to think about their learning.
After months and months of teaching my fourth graders how to use rubrics, my students get it now. My students are able to read a rubric, and grade themselves on their performance. Now grading their writing is much easier and it is interesting, when my students are in involved in their grade they try their hardest. It is almost funny how honest they have become when evaluating themselves and their work.
My students have not quiet made the transfer from their assessment of their work this time, and the fact that next time they will be in control of their behavior and effort. They seem to be stuck in the stage of, "Oh I don't do well with other punctuation marks other than periods, I never do."
